Speedy Gonzales will be heading to your movie theaters soon.  The New Line production has been confirmed to be a live-action/CG hybrid (similar to the Garfield and Alvin & the Chipmunk movies.

The script will be adapted by Alec Sokolow & Joel Cohen, who wrote the movie version of Garfield.

Who will do the voice of Speedy?  None other than George Lopez.

He will also be producing the movie with Anne Lopez & Lynette Ramirez under his production company George Lopez Presents.  Also producing are Jerry Weintraub, Tracy Ryerson, & Jill Arthur.

Since Speedy has been accused of being a racial stereotype, New Line wants to present a more PC version.  “We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy,” Anne Lopez said. “Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”

No release day has been set.

George Lopez has been doing pretty well for himself.  After his sitcom got cancelled, he got the form of good news as the reruns became very successful in syndication.  recently, he got a late night talk show on TBS that has been doing decent number for the cable channel.

  1. Loved the Garfield movies actually. They were a lot of fun. I think Speedy will make a great movie too. George Lopez should do a wonderful job with the voice. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one. Thanks for the info.
