New Disney film bossman Rich Ross has been in his role – which was formerly run by Johnny Depp’s buddy Dick Cook – for only about six month, but he’s taking no time in helping Disney bank on their tentpole business.

Monsters, Inc. 2, from critically acclaimed Pixar, will hit theaters November 16, 2012 – just in time for holiday season.

2001’s Monsters, Inc. grossed about $525 million globally.

Pixar will still have their typical summer release in 2012 with Brave, a movie starring the voices of Reese Witherspoon & Billy Connolly.

Disney/Pixar seems to be making use of the sequel concept lately, with the upcoming Toy Story 3 (in 3D, no less) and Cars 2.

Disney also has a fourth edition of a popular franchise coming out – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Ross recently spoke to the media about the Disney strategy moving forward.  According to Elizabeth Guider, Ross “emphasized that the tentpole business is crucial to the success of the global Disney brand but that not everything on the slate is a four-quadrant movie. Perhaps four out of 10 Disney pics per year would be genuine tentpoles going forward”.

So what do you think?  Are you excited about another edition of Monsters?  Does this taint your view of Pixar as a fresh/high-concept studio?  Or does this make them more of a profit-centered entity?
